MORE ABOUT BOLEN LIVESTOCK

Our Story

It all began in 1957 when a young family had a dream, to raise their family in agriculture. My grandparents bought a relatively undeveloped 160-acre piece of land and through hard work and determination they turned it into the ranch we have today. In the early 80’s my father returned home to Jaffray from Lethbridge, Alberta and opened a local butcher shop. By the year 2000 my father and stepmother had taken over the family ranch and were running a traditional cow-calf operation. My father closed the butcher shop at that time to focus on his love of agriculture. The high fluctuation of the beef market made ranching more interesting through the years forcing us to find other unique ways to get by. Fast forward to 2016 when my wife Kashtyn and I decided we wanted a life in agriculture. We moved home to the Kootenays after working on other ranches in Alberta and the Okanagan but had no idea how to make a living in the agricultural industry. Having some background in the meat industry due to my father’s influence, I apprenticed at a local butcher shop to learn the trade. After many late night discussions about the beef industry, and how consumers need to have confidence in a product, we decided to take our love for agriculture and turn it into a farm to table business in the summer of 2017.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

I enjoy cooking, and I enjoy eating good food. Good food being not just tasty, but processed as little as possible and knowing where it comes from these days is important, as well.

I’ve purchased a lot of lamb and beef from the supermarkets, but found it either outrageously expensive or lacking in quality, as far as flavour and presentation.

My wife and I were a little skeptical when we saw a post from Brodey Bolen on Facebook offering grass fed lamb and beef. However, we decided to order a half of a lamb; a half lamb isn’t very much, so if we weren’t happy with it we wouldn’t be out a lot.

It wasn’t long after placing our order that we received confirmation that it would be delivered from Jaffray to our door in Cranbrook, cut and wrapped per our requests.

The first cuts I decided to try were lamb shanks. I had never made shanks before, and decided to braise them with mirepoix, red wine, fresh thyme and rosemary, and a few other ingredients. The shanks were packaged nicely and trimmed beautifully.  As I was searing the shanks, I could tell the quality of the meat was very good.

After a few hours in a moderate oven, the shanks were served with fresh steamed potatoes and sautéed vegetables. The shanks were absolutely delicious! The meat was so tender and moist without the slightest hint of the gamey mutton taste I’ve experienced from other sources.

Fluke?

The next choice was stew meat. The tender cubes of lamb were trimmed perfectly and turned out beautifully in the rough stew.

So far, so good.

Next: lamb chops. Marinated an hour in soy sauce, garlic, sherry, and rosemary then broiled until lightly caramelized. We were sorely disappointed… that we made only three chops! They were the best lamb chops I’ve ever had. So tender, so flavourful. Absolutely beautiful cuts.

I can’t say enough about the attention Brodey has  paid to the trimming, packaging, and obviously the care taken to raise such top quality meat. We can’t wait to try the beef!

I’ve placed multiple orders with Brodey. Great people and GREAT service. Super accommodating in terms of delivery (I live in Nelson & they have worked with me on meeting up when and where was convenient) & very easy to coordinate with. The meat is also phenomenal. This is not the meat you are getting at No Frills. You can taste the difference as well as see it. The price is also amazing. For what you are paying for low-end ground beef at the store you are getting porterhouse steaks, roasts, etc. Lastly, it is great (and feels great) to support local farmers and to eat meat raised locally and sustainably. Cannot recommend getting your meat from Brodey enough.
